Ivan “Ironman” Stewart

Ivan “Ironman” Stewart, a legend in off-road racing, has made the name “Ironman” a reality. In 1973, Ivan was scheduled to co-drive in the Ensenada 300 in a Class 1-2 buggy. His co-driver broke his leg, so Stewart drove the car, won the race and the rest is history.

His career total of 82 victories includes a record 17 races in Mickey Thompson Entertainment Group’s (MTEG) stadium series, a record 17 Baja 500 and three Baja 1000’s. Of his ten point championships, he has four SCORE World championships and three MTEG championships. He is still the only person to win the Baja 1000 overall while driving a four wheel vehicle solo. Ivan has been a member of the Toyota factory team since 1983.

During his time with Toyota, he and his teammates earned Team Toyota 11 manufacturer’s championships and 42 main event victories — nearly three times more than any other truck team. Despite recent limited appearances, Stewart has not raced full-time since 2000. The “Ironman” continues to be an instrumental figure in the off road racing community. He founded his own off-road racing league, the Pro Truck Racing Organization, which races as its own class at all the premier off road events (the Baja 1000, Pikes Peak, Parker, etc.). Ivan’s success in early model Toyota pickups has certainly paved the way for the current success of Toyota pickups in the U.S. market.

Toyota has even produced a very limited number of Ivan Stewart “Ironman” Edition trucks. These trucks featured a special Ivan Stewart signature package with Toyota Racing Development (TRD) wheels, grille, interior, and supercharger. Even non-racing fans know Ivan from his success as a licensor in the video game market. He licensed his name and style of stadium racing to a series of games entitled “Super Off Road”, which have been described as some of the most popular arcade games of the 80’s.

Synonymous with rugged durability, consistency and toughness, Ivan “Ironman” Stewart’s storied career led to this 2006 induction into the Off-Road Motorsports Hall of Fame In 2009, Stewart was inducted into the San Diego Hall of Champions Hall of Fame. In November 2009, Ivan made his return behind the wheel for Toyota at the Baja 1000 Series 7 stock truck class. It will mark the first time in 9 years that he has raced in the premier event.
